LGBTQ+ Substance Abuse Treatment
As one of Oregon's top LGBTQ+ programs for young adult and teen addiction treatment for drugs and alcohol, our highly trained counselors will conduct one-on-one and group sessions specifically designed for people who identify as LGBTQ+. We use an evidence-based curriculum, LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy, and staff that is specially trained and passionate about helping the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBTQ Affirmative Therapy
Therapists will address the different oppressions each client has experienced. LGBTQ affirmative therapy addresses traumas and their impact on self-worth. This therapy will incorporate validation and celebrate the special gifts of each individual. Cielo Treatment Center encourages participation in LGBTQ meetings, engagement with LGBTQ+ recovery mentors, community involvement, and Portland Pride Week.
Addiction is especially prevalent in the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ individuals are often bullied at school and/or cast out from their families. In many cases, they turn to alcohol and drugs as a mental escape or coping mechanism to help with the pain of rejection or 'other-ness.' These individuals know, deep in their hearts and usually rather early in life, that who they are and/or what they want in a partner is regarded by many in society as abnormal and/or unacceptable. Dealing with this adversity so early in life, is it any wonder that LGBTQ individuals have much higher rates of substance use, suicide, and mental health issues?
At Cielo Treatment Center, we create an affirmative setting by providing supportive, therapy, inclusive material, literature, and resources. We also provide referrals to LGBTQ+ recovery centers and mentors, LGBTQ+-specific supportive housing, and HRT support and planning. All young adult and teen rehab counselors will ensure to use the preferred name and gender pronouns of every single client.
